Since I started blogging, my book collection has exploded. I’m buying more than I ever did before, but I’m also being sent dozens of new books for review. Unfortunately I’m not as ruthless as I’d like to be when it comes to my own little library. Really, I’m rather sentimental and it takes a lot for me to let go of books.
This year, I would really like to get better at culling books. Looking at the carefully curated Instagram shots which fill my feed, I’m sure this isn’t what most bloggers are trying to do. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have a big enough book collection when I see the insanely large collections of some bloggers. But in truth I just don’t have the space in my house for more books or new shelves. I’ve already got two, and another cabinet where books have also taken over, and for now that’s just going to have to do.
One of the biggest problems I have is attaching way too much value to an inanimate object. If the book was gifted to me or passed onto me by another blogger, I’m hesitant to let it go. Likewise I’m so reluctant to get rid of books I’ve bought simply because I feel like my money is going to waste if I do. That’s something I want to work on this year, especially when I know someone else will find enjoyment in the book.
I’ve become fairly good at getting rid of ARCs and review copies. I’ve started only holding onto the ones I’m sure I’ll be reading again. Otherwise I’ll pass them along to friends or post them on #booksfortradeau (which is great, by the way). How do you deal with your book collection? How do you decide what books you’ll keep and which will go?
